What is Ayurveda? |
Established 5000 years ago, by the great sages of India, Ayurveda is the oldest and most organized system of herbal healing in the world. Literally, Ayurveda means, "The Science of Life." Indeed, it is not merely a system of healing, but an entire way of life, which aims at helping man live in harmony with nature and also in harmony with himself. Ayurveda has never been more relevant than it is now, in terms of counteracting the degenerative processes, environmental pollution, toxic build-up and mental stress, all of which have become undesirable features of modern life
Ayurveda provides both curative and preventive measures towards optimal physical, mental and spiritual well-being. More than simply medical care, Ayurveda offers a philosophy whereby one may prevent unnecessary suffering and live a long, healthy life. Known as the mother of all medical systems, Ayurveda has undergone continuous research, development and refinement over past 5,000 years. Originally from India, Ayurveda is currently experiencing world-wide popularity as a revival sweeps in all continents.
Ayurveda employs the judicious application of nutritional guidance, herbal medicines, exercise therapy, transcendental meditation, special rejuvenation and purification therapies. Preferring to focus on the type of person who has the disease, rather than just understanding the type of disease the person has, Ayurveda is a patient-orientated system of healing.

According to Ayurveda, you can achieve health through daily routine. A typical Ayurdedic routine might look like this:
-Rise with the sun.
-After emptying the bladder and bowels, one should meditate for 20-30 minutes and then exercise.
-Exercise should preferably be done early in the morning before the daily shower or bath. The intensity of the exercise depends on your dosha - your body type. The ideal amount of exercise should be 1/2 of your capacity. For example, if you get tired after 30 minutes of jogging, you should stop after 15 minutes. When sweat appears on the armpits and forehead, respiration speeds up and one starts breathing through the mouth, the exercise should be stopped. Yoga is considered the preferred way of exercising because it combines physical and mental exercise.
-Sun Salutation
-Proper breathing Technique.
- Oil Self Massage
- The tongue should be cleaned with a tool made for this purpose. Cleansing of the tongue freshens up the mouth and also stimulates the secretion of the digestive enzymes.
- A dab of Sesame Oil should be put into each nostril or applied in the inner mucosa of the nasal cavity with the help of the fingers each morning. A few drops can be put on the end of the little finger and gently applied inside the nose. This is an excellent way to keep the nasal passages moist and is very beneficial.
Ayurveda heals by identifying your unique dosha (skin/body type). Vata, Pita, Kapha.
Each dosha combines in a special way the five elements of the universe (air, fire, water, earth, space). Knowing your body type is the key factor in selecting customized skin care, body care, hair care products that are right for you.
Ayurveda is a science that takes care of your every real - mental, physical and spiritual. What is good for one person isn’t good always good for everyone. Men and women use the secret of ayurveda based on their individual mind and body type. Ayurvedic philosophy says that we are each born with some of the characteristics of all three types, but in different proportions.
We are "in balance" when we are healthy, happy, and radiantly beautiful, expressing the ration of Kapha, Pitta and Vata elements set in us at birth.
|
Vata means “that which moves things”; it is sometimes translated as wind. Vata is comprised of primarily air with ether being a secondary element. It is the moving force behind the other 2 doshas, which are considered incapable of movement without it. It is responsible for all of the body's activities and sensations. It is responsible for the movement of air in and out of the lungs, blood through the circulatory system, and thoughts through the mind. It promotes mental balance and comprehension.
Pitta means 'that which digests things'. It is primarily fire with water as a secondary element. It is responsible for all chemical and metabolic transformations in the body, as well as for heat production. It also governs our ability to digest ideas and impressions and to perceive the nature of reality. It stimulates the intellect and kindles the capacity for enthusiasm.
Kapha provides support and substance to the body. It comes from a word which means that which holds things together. It's primary element is water with earth as a secondary element. It gives strength and stability, both physical and psychological, and governs human emotions such as love, compassion, forgiveness, loyalty and patience. Kapha can bestow resistance against disease and can support the healing process. Where Vata and Pitta effects are active on the body, Kapha acts to restrict these two forces and prevent their excessive manifestation.
